Surviving Financially With Constantly Escalating Gas Prices

Let's start with the basics. Here are some common sense ways to increase your gas mileage

  • Don't drive over 60 mph. Gas mileage drops precipitously when you exceed this limit.
  • Avoid unnecesary idling. By turning your engine off when you're waiting, you will save fuel, money, and also reduce environmental pollution.
  • Avoid fast starts and stops. Slow down gradually when approaching a stop sign or stop light.
  • Use cruise control when appropriate.
  • Keep your tires fully inflated and properly aligned. This can save up to 3% on gas costs.
  • Keep your engine tuned.
  • Change the oil at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer of your vehicle.
  • Check and replace air filters regularly.
  • Avoid carrying unnecessary items in your vehicle that add to its total weight. Every extra pound decreases your gas mileage--including those that you may carry on your body. (Click here to learn how important Japanese auto makers consider excess weight.)
  • Remember that cold starts waste fuel. When running errands, combine your trips to avoide this.
  • Consider car pooling, using mass transportation whenever possible, biking, and/or walking.
